ARTEINFORMADO Survey: ARCO should have more fairs around
February 27, 2008 - Wednesday

ARTEINFORMADO A new survey aims to investigate the opinion that industry professionals have, after a few days of its conclusion on the Recent ARCO, which this year has generated, if anything, more controversial than others. The responses of our readers are brought out hits (ARCO40 proposals, the presentation in London, the country selection guest, ...) and errors (the distribution of spaces Hall 14.1, no major galleries English vs international galleries repeat expendable) and proposals (ARCO should have more shows around.) These are the first views we receive.

Answer: Gilfer, artist.
Weaknesses: The worst, in fact, the distribution of spaces in Hall 14.1. All too tight and the bad organization of the Expanded Program Box.

Proposals: Give more space for all the proposals in Hall 14.1. In Halls 12 and 14 could still be on some galleries, with speeches and seen too little artistic interest.

Answer: Agustín Medina, president of the Foundation DeArte comtemporary.

Strengths: As the great fair that is consolidated ARCO art, I think their strengths, again, were the great media coverage and the massive influx public, professional and particular, especially highlighting the success of its international in London by the hand of Norman Foster. Also noteworthy in the new location IFEMA pavilions, which reinforce its identity and power. As for the art displayed believe that their proposals have generally fallen short of what is expected in a fair of this kind, emphasizing to me the high quality of some international galleries, out of which constituted the core (English and Brazil) of the fair.

Weaknesses: The location of some spaces on the second floor of one of the pavilions, which have gone unnoticed by most visitors due to poor marking of the plant.

Proposals: I think the debate about the limitation of English galleries are starting to be pathetic. ARC is an international fair that sells the image of Spain in the world and I think the quality of art displayed must be the sole objective of its organizers. In any fair in the world, and collectors, and visitors are concerned that the galleries present whether or not the country where the fair. All that matters is the creative power that is exhibited there. It is high time that the English gallery ARCO stop thinking about where to get a bargain shoppers institutional captives and care about improving their level, regardless of presence or absence in ARCO.

In Spain it takes many other fairs that cover the market gaps left by ARCO. As ESTAMPA, for example, where people can start walking in the world of art through his graphic work, or as our DeArte Fair, where we try to cover the spectrum of contemporary English art, English artists and galleries with original painting A step beyond ESTAMPA, both intellectually and financially affordable, to encourage the collecting of the middle classes.

All these fairs that complement the artistic landscape of our country, can and must live with ARCO, agree with her on the same dates and thus make Madrid a world leader in contemporary art, as is the case with the great museums that are strengthened around the Museo del Prado.

Answer: Immaculate Juarez, artist.

Strengths: Interesting the country invited, but expected more. A staging accessible spaces better prepared for current video, a security that is acceptable to enter (not say the same on the inside), excellent photographic and sculpture (though limited), originality, extraordinary items or large format in miniature artists. I loved emblematic English galleries and a few, left high the flag.

Weaknesses: Lack of project performance and impressive facilities. Language a challenge to overcome (yeah, we're in Spain, not bad considering the Castilian in the stands), works repeated (some three years ago that we see and is a pioneering art fair), I missed a national galleries (more than one, two or three), almost no space for the rest (7 hours of continuous walking can be exhausting), the area was somewhat surreal magazines, many stands completely empty and some unattended , the spaces were the most colorful (or huge, minimalist or variegated and tiny) new galleries that I did not contribute anything (but nothing at all) and galleries where gas fell by the (a penalty). Finally! for that they are new editions, to make amends!

Proposals: The correction of the defects, deficiencies, needs or errors in this edition. And if ARC can not accept into its ranks more English galleries, you have two options: either expand or create a parallel ARCO, which gives life to the most prestigious national salons. English fair must not close its doors to the English, the benefit of the international movement. Growing up is not about to put out another. Growth is GROW.

answer: Toni Pont, director of the gallery Trama (Madrid).

Strengths: The selection of galleries, it rewards those who bet on contemporary art and new trends, and new exhibition spaces for its comprehensiveness.

Weaknesses: The access to the various trade fairs, and labyrinthine, and excess foreign galleries that do not add anything new or fair quality.

Proposals: A better deal and space for young galleries.
